Southwestern Counties
County Cork
County Cork is also known as the Rebel County. Home to the city of Cork, Cork county can trace its roots back into the seventh century. The rough Atlantic Ocean provides a perfect backdrop to the wild and rugged coastlines of this county. You can stroll the many bridges and quays or check out the historic churches of the area.
The village of Blarney is also located in County Cork. Visitors can see the Blarney stone and visit Blarney Castle. Other historical wonders can be found in County Cork such as the beautiful beach town of Clonakilty with its spires, towers, gardens and, of course, beaches. Fota Island, because it is primarily a wildlife park, provides great fun for kids. Kinsale is another Irish town steeped in ancient history and a stroll through its streets is a great way to spend the day. Last but not least,be sure and enjoy an afternoon at Youghal, a walled thirteenth century town.
South Kerry
Red deer stroll among the dense forests full of oak, birch and mountain ash trees. These deer are native to Ireland as is the Strawberry-tree – a plant that is only found in Ireland.
Tourists can enjoy several lakes that provide a variety of water activities and great fishing. You will not want to miss the “Ring of Kerry” which is comprised of one hundred and ten miles of gorgeous bluff views, villages, small towns and beaches. Pubs and entertainment of all sorts can be had during the day and at night. The local Heritage Center, where many go for genealogical records, is located on Valentia Island. The quiet and picturesque town of Kenmare lies along the way.
County Limerick
The Ballyhoura Mountains are one of County Limerick’s features and the county is home to one of Ireland’s loveliest villages, Adare. Magnificent Norman architecture, wildlife parks and, of course, an assortment of outdoor sports all await visitors in County Limerick.
County Kerry North
This county is home to the Rose of Tralee festival which is held annually. Horse racing takes place at the Tralee horse track. You will find the old alongside the new here with Ogham Stones and a megalithic grave. The Kingdom of Kerry, as this county is often known, is simply beautiful. |
